The food chain generally goes like this: humans--eat-->plants and animals--eat-->plants and/or animals. Said another way, the "food chain" is the idea that humans can and do eat meat and animal products because a) they can, b) there are calories and some nutrients available in these items, and c) they like to.
But wait. The food chain is a concept used to explain what is the case, not what should be - nor what could be!
In fact, it doesn't have to be that way at all. We are an extremely capable species and have the choice of eating whatever we want.
My own personal food chain, for instance, looks like this:
me, some animals--eat--> plants only
other animals--eat--> animals and/or plants
You, too, can choose your own food chain! That is, you can if you want to. But why would you want to? What we eat is such a personal decision. I created the blog, "chooseyourownfoodchain" so that people could share their reasons for why they eat what they do, the challenges they face, and the benefits they reap.
On this blog, you'll find a mixture of the following:
- A series of interviews, each with a different vegan or vegetarian individual (or people who are planning on becoming vegan), each reflecting the interviewee's own path to finding a more compassionate way of life.
- Awesome photographs of stuff I eat, stuff I cook/bake, aka food porn.
- Recipes, recipes, recipes!
- My own thoughts and theories on a variety of topics, through a psychological-vegan-feminist lens, including but not limited to food, nutrition, animals, activism, psychology, feminism, politics, media, fashion, the vegan lifestyle, etc.
So, perhaps you'll come across some kindred ideas, or perhaps you won't, but in the end, I hope you come away with a greater curiosity about your own food chain.
